What Wear Class of Flooring Panels Is Best for a Home?

What Is the Abrasion Class of Panels?

The abrasion class is a parameter indicating the resistance of flooring panels to wear. Simply put, it helps assess their durability and predict how well they will withstand daily use over time. It is measured using the Taber test — a method where abrasive material is rotated thousands of times over the panel’s surface (laminate) until visible damage occurs.

Panels that withstand over 2000 rotations are classified as AC3. AC6 — currently the highest available class — can handle up to 8500 rotations without visible damage. Because of this outstanding durability, AC6 is not only used in homes but also in public areas like offices, schools, and restaurants.

Defined by the European EN 13329 standard, abrasion classes range from AC1 to AC6. However, AC1 and AC2 are no longer produced. Today, the lowest commonly available class is AC3, which is recommended for low-traffic rooms such as storage areas or bedrooms. The next level, AC4, is a standard choice for residential use. A step above is AC5, which is durable enough even for hallways and high-traffic areas.

AC6 exceeds the requirements for typical home settings but is often chosen for its exceptional durability and scratch resistance, ensuring long-term satisfaction.

Which Abrasion Class of Panels Is Best for a Home?

The best abrasion class for your home depends on your household’s specific needs. In homes without children, pets, or frequent visitors, AC4 will usually suffice. For homes with heavier use and greater risk of floor damage, consider panels rated AC5 or AC6. These offer enhanced resistance not only to wear but also to scratches, pressure, and — in waterproof versions — spills.

If you’re planning for a floor that will last many years, it's worth choosing a higher class. In multi-level homes, you might opt for different classes on each floor — for example, lower wear resistance upstairs in bedrooms, and higher durability in living areas below. However, using the same panels throughout the house ensures consistency and aesthetic cohesion — in that case, opting for a higher abrasion class is a safer bet.
