Act quickly
Paint stains are easiest to remove while they are still fresh. If possible, watch for potential stains even during painting. First, use a paper towel to remove the paint from the floor, then wipe the splattered area with a slightly damp cloth. You can add a cleaner to the water, as recommended on the label of your regular laminate floor cleaner. Always check the installation manual and warranty sheet for approved cleaning agents for laminate flooring.
Specialist laminate floor cleaner
Such a cleaning agent can be a specialist laminate floor cleaner. It’s also useful when you discover paint stains only after the painting is finished. Dried paint should be softened first – never scrape it off with a sharp tool. Use a cloth soaked in warm water and place it over the stain. Remember not to leave it too long (a few minutes is enough) and avoid soaking the floor, as excess water is not good for laminate flooring.
After softening, proceed as you would with a fresh stain – remove the excess paint and wipe the area with water and laminate floor cleaner. Use a cotton cloth or a soft sponge for this.
Water and dish soap
If you don’t have any special cleaners on hand, you can use just water or a small amount of dish soap. Wipe individual stains with a cloth dampened with water, always remembering to be moderate – light dampening and minimal soap.
Vinegar or acetone
For more stubborn paint stains, some people use vinegar. Mixed with water, it can help remove paint residue. Mix a small amount with water, then use a damp cloth to wipe the stains. Afterward, clean the area with warm water only.
The same goes for acetone, which helps with persistent stains, but be careful – applied in excess, it can damage the panels. If you choose this method, always test the substance on a hidden part of the floor first. Only if there’s no discoloration should you use acetone elsewhere.
Avoid sharp tools
And finally, a general rule that applies not only to removing paint but also to tackling other difficult stains. Never use sharp tools for this. You may be tempted to scrape off the stain, but never use a knife or metal spatula. This risks permanent damage like scratching the panels. If stains, including paint, don’t come off with wiping, you can use wooden or plastic tools. A wooden spatula is a good idea.
The most important rule when cleaning after renovation or painting is to vacuum dry (never with steam or excess water). Remember, gypsum dust or regular dust mixed with water will form a paste, leading to further contamination of the floor – so always start post-renovation cleaning by thoroughly vacuuming.
