Uncovered Windows
This is a good way to visually enlarge the kitchen in an apartment building. However, if this is not possible, there are several alternatives: opt for matte window stickers (they do not block much light while protecting against neighbors’ views) or light-colored blinds, such as the very trendy Roman blinds today. Alternatively, install café curtains in the window – this beautiful addition combines tradition and functionality.
No Doors or Sliding Doors
If possible, it’s worth converting the kitchen in the apartment into a kitchenette by removing one of the walls. Another beneficial solution is to omit doors entirely or choose sliding doors. Standard hinged doors take up a lot of space that could be better utilized.
Light Walls and Flooring
A kitchen in an apartment building will look best in a light color scheme. It will gain lightness, brightness, and spaciousness. Whites, beiges, and light greys all work well. Contrary to appearances, light flooring does not have to mean white tiles.
Options include vinyl panels, which have a European tradition – practical, aesthetic, and very original. Among light patterns that fit current trends, you can find, for example, marble-styled W21/L21 panels or slightly rustic W14/L14 panels from the IDÉAL collection that add a cozy effect to the interior. As you can see, a light kitchen floor also offers great freedom in style choices.
Light Kitchen Furniture
Combining a light floor with light furniture can look very appealing, especially in small and dark rooms like kitchens in apartment buildings. White or beige cabinets will make the kitchen appear larger. Modern-style furniture with smooth or glass-fronted and slightly glossy surfaces works particularly well here.
Upper Cabinets in a Small Kitchen
Some interior designers recommend avoiding upper cabinets in small kitchens. However, others argue that they are sometimes unavoidable – the only way to optimally use the available space. They even suggest that in kitchens in apartment buildings, it’s best to opt for upper cabinets reaching the ceiling, which provides extra storage space.
A compromise is to avoid covering all walls with cabinets and choose light and glass-fronted upper units. An original idea, in line with the latest trends, is to replace closed cabinets with open upper shelves that won’t overwhelm the space.
Good Organization
When talking about cabinetry, it’s worth mentioning a few words about organizing space in an apartment kitchen. Besides cabinets or shelves, items can also be stored on rails mounted on the walls, to which various baskets or organizers can be attached with hooks. On the hooks themselves, you can hang items like pans or cutting boards. Such solutions perfectly fit today’s most fashionable styles – modern and Scandinavian.
