How to Install Herringbone Panels?

Herringbone-patterned flooring panels are a unique offering from Weninger for a distinctive and character-filled floor. Thanks to modern production technology and an innovative approach to floor design, these panels come with an extremely convenient installation system — without the need for hours of cutting boards at specific angles. Our step-by-step guide will walk you through the entire installation process. Another advantage of this type of flooring is that no professional installation team or special technical skills are required. All you need is willingness and some time to review the instructions before your first installation. With Weninger herringbone panels, you can carry out the entire process yourself — our experts’ video will help you along the way. Let’s get started!

Herringbone Panel Installation – Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

Before installing laminate wood-based panels, carry out the necessary acclimatization process. At least 48 hours before installation, place the unopened packages in the room where the floor will be laid. Make sure the room temperature is no lower than 18oC and that the relative humidity is between 50–60%.

Step 2

Next, prepare the subfloor for panel installation. Make sure it is even, stable, and dry. Check carefully for any irregularities such as remnants of plaster, gypsum, or paint. If needed, remove them using appropriate tools, such as a spatula. Vacuum or sweep the room. It’s extremely important not to install these panels on existing carpet, old panels, or similar surfaces.

Step 3

Measure the entire room to determine the correct layout of the starting herringbone “triangles.” Ensure that the two edge triangles are exactly the same size, and take into account the maximum installation surface and necessary expansion gaps. Installation details and exact measurements can be found in the manual included with the package. If you are installing herringbone panels over water-based underfloor heating, check the subfloor moisture level. This should not exceed 1.8 CM% for cement screed or 0.30 CM% for anhydrite screed. Check the subfloor's flatness—irregularities should not exceed 1 mm over 1 meter in length. Use a 2- or 3-meter straightedge to measure. Any larger irregularities should be leveled with a special compound. Do not attempt to correct major unevenness using the underlay alone.

Step 4

At this stage, install the Ideal Profi 2.0 underlay on the even and stable subfloor. Unroll the underlay with the silver side facing up and tape the joints using 5 cm wide aluminum tape. Remember, the maximum underlay thickness should not exceed 2 mm. Before and during the installation of the panels, check the quality of each board. For more information, refer to the official Weninger website.

Step 5

Start the actual panel installation by laying the starting triangles. First, mark a cutting line and cut the triangle. The detailed method is shown in the instructional video:

Mark the center of one wall—this is where you'll begin laying the pre-cut starting triangles. Prepare and install the edge triangles along the entire length of the wall, trimming them as needed. Very important — make sure the starting triangles are cut perfectly, as this step will affect any potential gaps in the floor later on. Small pieces (cut near the wall) can be glued to the next full panel to prevent them from shifting when skirting boards are installed. Connect the starting triangles using additional panels with the universal X-lock system to create a stable base for continued installation. To begin a new row, measure and install a small triangle near the wall. Use spacers to mark the expansion gap, which should be at least 10–12 mm. This helps stabilize the base of the panels. Continue installing additional rows, keeping in mind the expansion gap. Details on its width can be found in the installation instructions included with each package. Continue laying the panels by connecting them on the short side. When removing any panel, always use a rubber mallet to safely detach it. Once installation is complete, remove all spacers from the expansion gap. Install the skirting boards, vacuum, and clean the floor. Familiarize yourself with the user guide for Weninger panels.
